Diagnose First!

Are You Just Throwing Parts at Your Mower?

In the video, you see me literally throwing parts at a mower.

It looks ridiculous—but that’s exactly what many people do when their mower won’t start or isn’t running correctly.

They replace the spark plug. That doesn’t fix it.

Then they buy a carburetor. That doesn’t fix it.

Next comes a fuel pump, ignition coil, solenoid, battery, starter, or another part somebody online said would “probably” solve the problem.

Before long, they’ve spent hundreds of dollars—and the mower still doesn’t run.

One Customer Replaced Three Parts Before Coming to Me

A customer recently brought me a mower after replacing three different parts. Unfortunately, none of them fixed the original problem.

The customer wasn’t careless. They were simply trying to repair the mower based on guesses instead of testing.

That is why proper diagnosis matters.

A mower that won’t start could have a fuel problem, an ignition problem, low compression, incorrect valve adjustment, a failed safety switch, damaged wiring, or several other issues. Many of these problems can produce nearly identical symptoms.

Replacing parts without testing is not diagnosing—it’s gambling with your money.

The Symptom Is Only the Starting Point

When someone tells me, “My mower won’t start,” that doesn’t immediately tell me which part has failed.

I need to know:

  • Does the engine crank?

  • Does it click when you turn the key?

  • Is it getting spark?

  • Is fuel reaching the carburetor?

  • Does it start with starting fluid?

  • Does it run only with the choke on?

  • Did the problem happen suddenly or gradually?

  • Was anything repaired or replaced before the problem started?

Those details help narrow the problem down before money is spent unnecessarily.

Send Me a Video Before You Buy Parts

If your mower, generator, pressure washer, edger, or other small engine equipment isn’t working correctly, send me a short video showing exactly what it’s doing.

Let me hear the engine. Show me what happens when you try to start it. Tell me what happened before the problem began and what you’ve already checked or replaced.

I may be able to point you in the right direction and help you determine what needs to be tested next.

Before you throw another part at your equipment, take a minute and get another opinion.

Send me a video and tell me what it’s doing. It might save you hundreds of dollars.
